Back to school…

September 1st, 2010

after a rockin-summer is not so easy to do, is it? And the heat is still cranked up! Something always happens to me around this time of year…….I’m ready for a new season. Maybe it’s because I shoot outdoors most of the summer or I’m vacationed out. Even Hollywood is not so glittery in the summer  it feels different when we east-coasters (I cant believe I just wrote that!) head west in the dead of winter, doesn’t it? The contrast makes the whole thing more magical when more green is seen. Regardless, seeing my sister and nephew shown in the photo posted,  is worth everything and the memories we created with  our boys will be embedded in all our minds,  photo albums and slide shows that we will cherish for an eternity. I hope your summer has been memorable, too! Oh….news flash!!! My little guy started 4th grade this week with a fractured foot (ouch!) and a cast up to his knee the color of neon green. GREEN!!! Reminds me of my new company logo…have you seen it? My closest friends call me “KJ” so I decided to really claim it with one of my most favorite colors!

The green is inspiring and fresh! I figure every seven years or so we all need a new “look”. Speaking of new and improved looks, are you ready for your back to school make-over and new images? One HOT Summer….

July 26th, 2010

does not even start to describe the heat and sizzle that’s been going on with my life! How about yours?  I don’t know what happened to spring. It sprung and then took off a hundred miles an hour. Between back-to-back events/weddings, a ton of  lifestyle shoots, Noah’s baseball games, travel games (which just ended tonight) mom flying out for a few weeks, a Dave Matthew’s concert (he’s awesome but too many stoners) a bunch of yoga, tennis, bike rides (when the air was not like pea soup,  some summer flicks, a few BQ’s and then at the end of the day…the reliable and yummy good ol trip to the farm. I do LOVE this place especially on a full moon! Ice cream just tastes better. Try this place if you’re in my area. Route 302 on your way to Newtown. Well….I’ve got to run… I’m busy shooting a book, of course shooting for many clients and in between planning (rather cramming) the last 5 weeks of summer into a ton of action before school starts. Hope you’re having an awesome summer, too!

Under My Umbrella…..

Under

I can’t get Rihanna’s song out of my head today. Have you heard it? You know the one I’m thinking about don’t you? http://s0.ilike.com/play#Rihanna:Umbrella:25333875:m14637239

Jet-Setting……

May 5th, 2010

is far more glamorous in a corporate jet….don’t you think? Well….one can dream can’t they? Sigh.

That was how I felt last week photographing Chris Wright Martell and his crew aboard this beauty. Long past are the days when I was really jet-setting all around the world. (Does the name ‘Pan Am’ ring a bell?) Do I miss it? Yes and no. I miss the quiet reading time, for sure, but otherwise, business travel is not that much fun and is certainly not always glamorous, especially these days.

Speaking of travel …what are your summer travel plans? My little guy (8 years old) really wants to hit Paris. He has his sights set on the Eiffel Tower ..why not dream big? My sister wants us to join her out at the Grand Canyon. My mother wants us to visit the Northwest, and my father has invited us down South. How can we be all the places we want to be without our Lear jet? My anwser these days? Can you say SKYPE (http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/macosx/?gclid=COXWlrPuqqECFRRM5QodjkUZFQ&cm_mmc=PAIDS%257CGAWS-_-AMERC%257CUS%257CEN-_-BD%257CSTRCT-_-zf0gn2) boys and girls?

My Lifestyle blog is an open door to…

April 13th, 2010

your new world. Speaking of doors, what do you think of my new yellow front door? A cheery way to banish the blahs of winter and welcome in a fresh new season.

Ok–it’s time to dish on the real deal about what I’m doing and planning for the future. For the full scoop, you’ll need to tune in to upcoming episodes of KJL. But first things first…this whole thing started because I’m a single mom living in the ‘burbs. Wow…I said it! I did not ever picture myself as being “single in the suburbs.” However, I am not alone. From what I gather, there are about 90 million single women between the ages of 18 and 80 out there ( http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2001/cb01-113.html ). We’re everywhere, and we have NEEDS (mind OUT of the gutter, silly!)…one of which is the need to know how to look our best. We want to step out of our jazzy yellow (or red, blue, white, green, or pink) front doors and know that we’re putting our best, most stylishly shod foot forward into the bright new world, each and every day. So, I”m here to help. I can help you discover your unique style…then look it, live it, and love it–at work and at home.

Whatever made me decide to do this? Well, when people hire me as their photographer, I meet with them first to review outfits, hairstyle, and makeup. I was surprised at the number of men and women who needed help in this department. I mean, we really can’t see the forest for the trees, can we? When we live with ourselves every day, it can be hard to break out of old patterns and to  know exactly what look suits us best. But that’s “where I live,” so to speak–a skill cultivated from years of modeling and being on both sides of the lens.

There can be many reasons to want a makeover.Perhaps you are changing jobs or careers, and your old look doesn’t suit your new environment. You might be starting to date, and want to make sure you look hip and cool (such a confidence builder, right?). Maybe all those hours in the gym have paid off and you want to show off a bit. Why not? You’ve earned it! Changing or refreshing your look is like painting your front door with the change of season–it’s invigorating, exciting, and opens your eyes to a whole new world of possibilities. Oh, and guys–you’re welcome to join us any time!

Love….love…love…

April 13th, 2010

is getting something on sale. I now realize that being thirfty is nifty (kind of has a nice ring, don’t you think?).  Over the Easter weekend, my sister Kandeyce flew out from the west coast to visit. People mistake us for twins, and we do seem to gravitate towards the same clothes, jewelry, makeup, hair styles, and art (but, thankfully, not men!) All kidding aside, she asked several times  ”Where did you get that bag?” “Where did you get that dress?” and then the biggy “How the heck does one date out in the middle of the boonies?”  Understand that my sister, who  has a few more coins in her purse than I do, prefers small boutique designer shopping. I, however, have my favorite one-stop shop. A little place called Target www.target.com or targeet, if you happen to be feeling carefree and capricious. Je t’adore Targeet….I get a mood lift just walking in the door. Check out this little white pleather jacket…what da ya think?

So….what’s a single working mom to do, besides trying to win the multi-tasking award of the year? I figure I have time on my hands (yeah, right! ). Wait a minute….let’s see….I run a full-time photography studio and am single-handedly raising my 8-year-old son, and this isn’t enough on my plate? I do take time for family and friends, though. Most are married, but a few are single.  My girlfriend Patty (a knock-out Sofia Loreen type) has the worst man issues. For some reason, she comes to me for advice. Check out this little gem. She tells me the other day that her ex boyfriend suggested becoming “friends with benefits.” Can you believe it? That is SO 1988. (Maybe he was planning to leave his power suit draped over her boudoir chair while he boffed away?) After calming my initial revulsion, I thought about her ex-beau’s suggestion, and asked Patty if she considered that they were friends. She shyly answered, “Well…no. Come to think of it, we are not really good friends.”

( This is my “image” on the left of being really good friends.)

Then I asked her “So, what is the benefit part?” (this is my “image” on the right of what a benefit should look like). Patty sighed, “Well, sadly, he doesn’t have THAT going on, either.”

“Oh…..I get it, so there is absolutely nothing in it for you then, is there?” I pointed out. Patty looked relieved. “Well, doggone it….I guess we just figured that one out!”

My advice to Patty…and to all single girls of all ages out there…is to stand firm and really think about it (I call this “digest time”) before you take the plunge into anything, really. I recommend this to many of the younger girls I coach, especially the ones moving to a huge city or starting a high-paced modeling or acting career ….where temptation is everywhere. Did I tell you that I’m offering consults on breaking into the acting and modeling business? By the hour, in person or via Skype.

Ok, back to you. Taking the time to reflect on your life, to cultivate and remain true to your personal values, to process your emotions, and to learn to trust your intuition, is super essential. Think of it as cultivating the garden of YOU. Your attitude and the choices you make today will shape your future and also determine your relationships. Make sure those choices…and those relationships…are healthy and have earned their rightful place in your sacred garden. Get rid of the toxic weeds. That’s my “KJ” relationship and style advice for the day!

Keeping Family Traditions…

April 1st, 2010

has been a bit challenging for me and my son, Noah, because my entire family is spread out–most of my relatives are peppered along the West Coast, but a few live down South, too. Now, while I can’t choose my family, I do get to choose my friends (hallelujah!).  My dear friends, the Goodmans, invited Noah and me to join them in yet another awesome Passover seder this week. The Jewish traditions are really interesting, and I love to be able to share them with my little guy.

When I was a kid, Easter was a huge deal in my family. The bunny was very clever, and made the egg-hunt super cool with lots of notes, containing clues leading to the big basket, inside the eggs. Fast-forward more than a few egg hunts. My sister and her son Oskar are flying in from LA tomorrow, and I’ve been running around searching for the perfect Easter bunny gifts for our 8-year-old boys. After much back-and-forth, we decided on matching pogo sticks from Toys R Us! http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3719372&CAWELAID=408876149 These will provide a terrific way for those boys to burn up some energy so they can settle down to dinner. Since I”m not really a big ham…person (ha-ha!), we’re opting for prime rib. And, if the weather man is right, the bunny will hide eggs and treats outside this year. Which means I’ve been on a spring cleaning binge all this past week.

My close friends and family all know what a crazed neat-nick I am. Hal, my life-coach, asked me to do an exercise this week. “Kristen, try leaving the dishes in the sink for a couple of days,” he advised. What??!!! I am exploring new unchartered stuff with Hal that will result in some really cool art…..all coming soon! But the “leave your house a mess for a few days” exercise is one of those “digging deeper” exercises that I find to be especially tough. In fact, I could not do it (sorry, Hal!).  I lasted one day with dirty dishes. Enough!! So, do you know about this super duper dust buster that I found online? Check it out:  http://tinyurl.com/yghy4s8. I love it! It’s amazing to discover what makes me happy! Guess you could say that it doesn’t take much…

Speaking of happy……My mother snapped this photo of us (above) one Easter Sunday (circa 1970’s something) and she just emailed this song called sisters that makes me smile every-time I hear it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WiyfKsRJiI

I hope you smiled listening to the song and have something fun planned for Easter, too!

Rao’s Restaurant…..

March 17th, 2010

is my kinda place. The only restaurant I’ve ever been to that tells you what you’re gonna eat, and you’re thrilled with what is served! The service is the best! The food is outstanding and the “host with the most”–the one-and-only Frank Pellegrino (owner)–is the best on the planet. Singing with Frank always tops off a great night at Rao’s.  I don’t think there could be an off night…at least, I have yet to see it.

While out and about yesterday, I dropped in on Michelle at Ink (fine stationary…oh Michelle, where is your site??).  I wanted to check out her shop interior and wall space, because I”m  thinking of hanging a HUGE colorful photograph on her back wall. The first thing she said was “Hey, you’re in Rao’s cookbook!”. I was floored, because this is the first time anyone has ever mentioned seeing my name in the book. Well, you can imagine the curiosity about Rao’s ….and then she said that “Larry” was mentioned, too. Of course, I go to Rao’s with Larry, it’s his second home. I’m thrilled when he invites me and friends to dinner…it’s always memorable. Only one glitch…expect to wait about a year on the wait list to get a table!

Andy Warhol…..

March 17th, 2010

was with us at lunch yesterday.  Well, it felt like he was, at least in spirit. The weather has been so AMAZING that I had to wear white jeans and a little lavender top to lunch yesterday. I met with the always fun and elegant Susan Dumont’ Bengston. We were reminiscing about the different careers we’ve had, and how much that life experience means to us, our families, and our clients. After sharing memories about our world travels, I felt inspired to tell her a fun story that happened on my first visit to Paris. I had just turned 18, and was fresh off the farm. Well, to put it more precisely, it  was my first time on a date with a Swedish Superstar Tennis Player and my first time in a LIMO!!! Wow…I was impressed until the driver stopped at a building to pick up a man, who  got in the car and sat next to me. He was very quiet and had this sort of “white cropped hair” thing going on. I was thinking “Who the heck is this?,” when my date leaned over and whispered that  Andy Warhol was joining us for dinner, too. That was a night to remember. I haven’t thought about that evening in many moons, but for some reason, lunch with Susan brought it all back. And just as I was saying, “Andy Warhol,” Susan said “Look at my new watch!”  I love that Warhol watch and want one, too, as a memento of a magical evening spent spellbound under the Parisian stars.

Here a few nuggets from Andy:

“Isn’t life a series of images that change as they repeat themselves?” — Andy Warhol

“Art is what you can get away with.” — Andy Warhol

“They say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” — Andy Warhol
